Sign language interpreter via video for deaf and hard of hearing people

Have you ever received a letter from a service provider (your GP or council perhaps) asking you to call them to book an appointment or discuss a matter? Well, then you know just how frustrating it is when there is no alternative way of getting in touch with them and you are forced to ask a hearing friend or relative to call them for you. This is where having instant access to a sign language interpreter via video, can make a huge difference.

In addition to barriers to accessing information, social isolation can be a real threat for deaf BSL users especially the elderly. Our British Sign Language (BSL) video interpretation services can mean that life becomes much more accessible, bringing the deaf person closer to hearing family and friends, for example through phone calls using a sign language interpreter.

Video Relay Services is a fantastic way to enable deaf people especially deaf parents/ families to communicate with hearing people in daily lives via video phone and interpreters. Imagine the day where deaf parents, using VRS will be able to liaise with the school, GP, children activities centres etc,  easily using the webcam on TV or via computer or mobile phone, be able to order pizza or takeaway from local restaurant, have a chat with families and friends via VRS and many more. VRS is the best way forward, putting deaf person in the control in telecommunication, giving us the freedom of who to call in BSL without having to rely on English or asking someone to make the call or making an effort to visit the place to explain what you want when it can be easily resolved via VRS!

What are the benefits of using SignVideo BSL interpreting?

Having phone calls relayed in BSL via video can increase your independence and make your life easier. You can:

  • Contact your hearing family and friends
  • Make personal appointments privately
  • Talk independently to your children’s teachers, find out information about services, arrange deliveries, buy tickets and many more – just like hearing people do
  • Contact customer service helplines easily
  • Have your letters translated from English to BSL, and from BSL to English when you write back

So how does the video interpreting service work?

You can access SignVideo from your computer or laptop with a webcam, tablet or smartphone (iOS or Android). We can even provide you a dedicated videophone if you need it. All you need is a high-speed broadband connection or a 3G/4G data plan on your mobile device.

You simply connect to the SignVideo service by clicking on the app. You will then be connected to one of our professional and fully qualified interpreters via video. They will dial the person or number you want to call and simply relay the conversation between BSL and English instantly and in real time.
